The volatility of glass prices has seen module prices start to rise. The raw materials price volatility which has afflicted the solar industry this year has been reflected in a string of positive “profit warnings” from Chinese group Xinyi.
Why are PV module prices falling?
Photovoltaic (PV) module prices are a key metric for PV project development and growth of the PV industry. The general trend of global PV module pricing has been a rapid and steep decline— an order of magnitude over the past 10 years (Mints April 2019)—enabled by economies of scale as well as manufacturing and technology improvements.
How much LCOE does a solar PV system have?
Utility PV systems were benchmarked to have an LCOE of approximately 5 cents/kWh in 2020 (Feldman, Ramasamy et al. 2021). To achieve the 2030 SunShot goal, the lifetime economics of PV systems must be improved across multiple dimensions.
Will rising solar glass prices lift profits?
While the news will be welcomed by investors, Xinyi Solar pointed out the rise in average selling prices for solar glass witnessed – compared to the first six months of last year – would lift profits despite the fact prices have fallen “substantially” in the current three-month window. The relative price differences among the different PV technologies are less pronounced for module MSPs than for cell MSPs, because the higher-efficiency technologies require less module material per watt. Assumptions include manufacturing of 72-cell modules in urban China, not including tariffs.
