Will Saudi Arabia open a solar power plant?
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the opening of the Sakaka solar power plant on Thursday. The crown prince also said agreements have been signed for seven new solar power projects across the country. The projects are part of a push towards renewable energy under the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.
Where is a solar project located in Saudi Arabia?
The project site lies approximately 25km south-east of Al Majmahh, in the Riyadh province of Saudi Arabia. The project will utilise bi-facial PV solar panels on pile-driven mounting structures. The solar panels will be equipped with tracking technology and an automatic robotic cleaning system.
How many solar projects are there in Saudi Arabia?
The seven new solar projects will be located in Madinah, Sudair, Qurayyat, Shuaiba, Jeddah, Rabigh and Rafha. They will be financed by five investment alliances made up of 12 Saudi and international companies. Prince Abdulaziz praised the private sector’s “fundamental role” in the projects.

The Sudair solar power project is a 1.5GW photovoltaic (PV) solar farm being built in the Riyadh province of Saudi Arabia. It will be the biggest solar power plant in the Kingdom, upon completion. Sudair One Renewable Energy Company, a special purpose vehicle (SPV), is developing the project with an estimated investment of SAR3.4bn ($906m).

With a combined value of SAR12.3 billion (USD3.3 billion), the new solar PV facilities are expected to contribute an additional 5,500 MW of renewable energy to the national power grid once operational in the first half of 2027. Financial closes are expected by the fourth quarter of 2024.
